When the first teaser of Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar starrer 2.0 had dropped, not everybody was very impressed by what they saw. Given that the film is a sequel to Thalaiva’s 2010 blockbuster Robot, expectations were humongous and the teaser could not live up to them. Then came out the hugely anticipated trailer and it did manage to garner much more positive responses.
However, these things were never going to stand in the film’s way as the cinemagoers had already made their minds and rightly so. 2.0 is not just India’s first ever film to be shot in 3D but is also the country’s most expensive project till date. Having as many as 2000 VFX shots, the Shankar directorial is riding on a budget of a whopping Rs. 550 crore. And then, it has Rajinikanth in it. These reasons were enough for the film to take an earth-shattering start at the box office.
2.0 created a havoc on the day of its release i.e. November 29 as it grossed approximately Rs. 110 crore worldwide with more than 75 percent coming in from India. Considering that Rajinikanth is a rage in the southern states, 2.0 performed exceptionally well there as it brought in around Rs. 21.5 crore from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Rs. 20 crore from Tamil Nadu, Rs. 8 crore from Karnataka and Rs. 5.5 crore from Kerala. The Hindi version of the film also took an excellent start as it raked in Rs. 20.25 crore on Thursday.
The film continued its monstrous run on the second day as well and is likely to earn on the lines of day 1. While the Hindi version saw a minor drop as it collected Rs. 18 crore on day 2, the southern states are expected to more than make up for it. The overall exact figures of day 2 will be out soon.
Further, 2.0 will certainly get a good boost on Saturday and Sunday and will put up a humongous total in its opening weekend.
